Stephen Mahon

Teenage Head was formed in 1975 by students at Hamilton’s Westdale Secondary School. As one of the founding members, Steve continues to play bass with the current band members. The ability to make great music and be drawn to art often go hand in hand.

In Steve’s own words:

“I have felt that I’ve been an artist all my life. My dad taught me how to work a 35 mm camera in my early teens, I’ve got a good eye for when to take a shot and when not to. I can’t look at a picture on a wall that’s not level, it drives me crazy. I also can’t help looking at an. image and thinking how I would have cropped the image differently.

Being in Teenage Head gave me a chance to help design our album covers and posters, I’m still doing that. I’m truly in awe of people who can set up an easel and just paint a sunset, like the Group of Seven.

No one has inspired me more than Warhol. When someone compares my work to Andy, there’s no better compliment. I think that for most creative people, there’s just not enough time in the day to make art, with the day job and just life in general. I’ll admit I’m a bit of a perfectionist, so for every piece I feel is complete, there’s a 100 that just didn’t make the cut. My advice to any would be artists out there is to follow your gut, no one else”.
